Clean Before You Use Your Patio Furniture Covers

Covering your outdoor furniture is always a good idea. But before you protect your outdoor furniture with furniture covers, take a few easy steps to make sure you’ve cleaned each piece. Here are some guidelines for how to clean your outdoor furniture before you put furniture covers on:

  • Acrylic cushions: Clean acrylic cushions with a mixture of soap and water. The best method is spot cleaning with a sponge.
  • Metal furniture: You can clean metal furniture such as steel or wrought iron with water and a gentle soap. For pieces that aren’t rust resistant, use a paste wax.
  • Wicker: For wicker furniture, hose down with water. Be careful to use a lower pressure so as not to damage the individual pieces. You can use mild soap and water with a sponge for more stubborn spots.
  • Wood: You can clean any varnished wood furniture with soap and water. Just remember to rinse.
Cleaning Your Patio Furniture Covers

The easiest way to clean your Patio Furniture Covers is while they are covering your furniture.

Your Patio Furniture Covers may be spot washed by using a soapy solution of a mild detergent and lukewarm water. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove the soap and allow to air dry. For heavier stains, prepare a solution of one (1) cup of bleach plus half (1/2) cup of mild detergent per gallon of water. Spray on the entire area and allow soaking. Rinse with clean water and allow to air dry.

Be sure your Patio Furniture Covers are completely dry before folding away for storage.

Sunglo Patio Heaters

Sunglo Patio Heaters

Sunglo Patio Heaters

The Sunglo Patio Heater was introduced in the early 1960’s as a new concept to help people enjoy the outdoors during the cooler months. Over the years, the Sunglo Heaters have become tremendously popular in North America and throughout the world. Residential and commercial users a like have discovered the benefits of extending the outdoor season.

The original challenge of designing an outdoor heater was to create an appliance that not only produced a comfortable amount of heat, but would also withstand the rigors of the outdoor environment. The Sunglo Patio Heater have led the way in meeting both of these challenges.

Part of the secret of Sunglo’s success is not only the amount of heat it produces, but how the heat is distributed. The deep dish reflector broadcasts the radiant heat over a large area so everyone can enjoy it. Sunglo Heaters are designed to stay lit even in a light breeze. To head people outdoors, Sunglo patio heaters utilize infrared heat. Infrared head that warms people like the sun on a cold day. The air temperature does not need to build up before you feel the warmth of the emerging sun. Infrared heat passes through the air heating people and all solid objects.

Fire Pit Buying Guide

Fire Pits

Relaxing in the backyard on a summer or fall evening is always fun, but bringing the excitement of a camp fire to your yard changes everything. The outdoor firepit is a relatively new creation. Chimineas were around for a while, but the chimenea usually only provides heat from the small opening, not all the way around. But an outdoor fireplace or fire pit brings to mind campfires, beach bonfires, and of course the perfect excuse for smores. A backyard fireplace is a pretty big project, and needs to be planned in the context of patio and yard design. But a backyard firepit is inexpensive, small, and easy to setup. Below we will review some of the most popular fire pits, check out some firepit pictures, and get some advice on buying a fire pit.

Everyone, from kids to adults, seem to love kicking their feet up around a the roaring glow of an evening fire. Adding a firepit to your yard will bring your family and friends together in a relaxed, outdoor setting.

When buying a fire pit, there are a few things to consider.

The first is style and design. Are you looking for a chimney-style look, a camping ring look, a fire bowl design, or a table-top firepit?

Second, what size do you need? The smaller fire pits are about 20-25 inches in diameter, while medium-sized pits are 25-35 inches. The largets fire pits are about 40-45 inches in diameter, almost the size of a patio table. Consider where you want to put in and plan accordingly. If it will be on a smaller patio, you will lose a lot of patio space with a 45 inch fire pit – consider 20-25 inches instead.

The final consideration is price. You can get a cheap fire pit for about $99 – but the stand or base may not be very sturdy, the metals used may corrode or rust, and the screen may fall apart – the real low end units are not meant to last more than 2 or 3 seasons. On the high end, you can easily pay more than $500 for gas-powered fire pits that use propane, or for designs that include granite tabletops around the fire pit. Have a budget and quality level in mind before you start shopping, and stick with your game plan.

Fire Pit Tips – Firepit Plans

Be sure to follow the manufacturer safety warnings and precautions. Never place outdoor fireplaces near the walls of your home or other structure. Most also include warning about use on wooden decks. The ideal locations is a cement, tile, or other hard stone surface that is fireproof, including a similar backdrop to protect from sparks and embers. You should also be in the open air with no overhangs or enclosures around you. You also want to stay away from dry grasses and brush or firewood that could ignite. You may also want to consider portability when you buy a fire pit – some are collapsible or can be broken into simple parts and easily packed into the car or truck to take to the beach house, camping, the lake, etc.

Fire Pit Accessories – Fire Pit Reviews

The most popular fire pit accessories are grills, screens, covers, and fire tools. Most fire pits will come with a screen to keep sparks and embers from igniting your neighbors roof, but they can rust out, get bent or damaged, and sometimes you need a replacement. Vinyl fire pit covers are another popular option, keeping it out of the rain and protected from the elements when not in use. Some of the nicer firepits have finished table surfaces around a central fire bowl, and keeping them clean and nice looking requires a little more protection that the simple copper bowl firepits.

Patio Heater Buying Guide

Patio Heater Buying Guide

Patio Comfort Patio Heater

Why Patio Heaters?

Because summer can’t last forever driving people inside, during the cooler months. Whether you’re a restaurateur hoping to expand seating capacity to the outdoor section, a hotel manager trying to keep the poolside feeling like paradise, or a homeowner looking to spend as much time possible in your backyard, stylish patio heaters – and their cousins, spot heaters – help brush off that touch of chill and keep the gathering warm and happy.

What you need to know about Patio Heaters:

Different settings require different forms of patio heating. Patio heaters throw heat in a circle; spot heaters are focused in one direction. Both have portable, stand-alone options; spot heaters are otherwise mounted by brackets, while patio heaters come in freestanding, tabletop, ceiling-mount, and in-ground forms.

What kind of area do you need to heat?

Patio heaters provide even, circular heating over as much as a 20-foot diameter; spot heaters are better when more intense, focused heat is needed. Patio heaters are also designed with a nod to style; they’re meant to complement outdoor settings like patios and trendy restaurants, while spot heaters have a more industrial aesthetic.

What should I know about patio heaters?

Portable – These full-sized patio heaters have no fixed fuel line; they can be moved from place to place as the need for warmth – up to a 20-foot diameter – arises. Most are designed with a compartment for their fuel tanks.

Tabletop – They’re compact, portable, inexpensive options perfect for providing warmth over a small circle. Many are designed with bases that house fuel tanks.

Ceiling/Wall Mount – Don’t want to clutter your space? Opt for a ceiling-mount model, which provides all the power and heating capability without getting in the way. These models are built for permanent installment; they’re designed to hook into an established natural gas supply.

In-ground – Built for permanence, power, and stability, in-ground models generally heat a broader radius than portable models. They’re usually built to tap into an established natural gas supply – although the Zubri Classic Stainless Steel Patio Heater houses a 20-pound propane tank. They’re ideal for commercial establishments.

Power rating/range – Power ratings are expressed in BTUs (British Thermal Units); the higher the BTU rating, the broader the heater’s range. Products boasting the same range can be compared by BTU rating; the higher the rating, the more effective the heating over the described range.

Construction – The vast majority of patio heaters are made from steel, although some at the lower end of the price range include lower-quality aluminum parts. The type of steel used – stainless, weather-treated – varies by price, as does the size of the base (for portable heaters) and the diameter of the pole.

Dome – Another important feature of the construction is the dome. Domes with bigger diameters allow better, more effective heat distribution. Most patio heaters have single-dome construction, but the Endless Summer Triple Dome Commercial Outdoor Patio Heater is easily distinguished by its triple-dome construction, which guards the heating element against wind and diffusion.

Fuel – Most patio heaters are fueled by liquid propane tanks (Propane Patio Heaters); some are designed to tap into an established natural gas source (Natural Gas Patio Heaters), while other use electric radiant heat (Electric Patio Heaters). Others come in two models, allowing you to order by fuel preference. Please note that for models that use tanks, the fuel is generally sold separately.

Ignition – Only the most basic models require anything more than the push of a button to ignite. Most models come with a form of piezo electric ignition, which produces sparks that interact with the fuel; higher-end heaters can have automatic or electronic ignition.

Safety features – Patio heaters are available with a wide range of safety features – the most basic of which are automatic shut-off switches, to prevent leaking gas, and safety tilt shut-off switches, to prevent heaters from lighting objects on fire should they fall. Other features include heat adjustment, pilot lights, tip-resistant construction, and shut-off switches to guard against severe weather.

Heater accessories – The primary accessory line for patio heaters is patio heater covers, which guard against dust, dirt, and insects – all of which shorten a heater’s life and limit effectiveness. Another option is a clamp to hold tabletop models in place.

What should I know about spot heaters?

Energy – Most spot heaters are electric-powered and must be hard-wired. The Sunpak Patio Heaters Infrared Spot Heater can come in propane-powered or natural-gas-powered models but features electronic ignition.

Power rating – Electric spot heater power is measured in watts; propane or gas spot heater power is measured in BTUs. The more BTUs or watts, the more effective the spot heater in warming its target.

Mounting/portable – Many spot heaters are designed for ceiling or wall mounting; other, free-standing models can be moved from place to place where the heat is required. Most of those that are portable are usually lower in wattage rating.

Application – Along with standard use in heating specific outdoor and indoor areas (like restaurant decks and warehouse aisles, respectively), spot heaters are perfect for greenhouses and garages, and for tucking underneath balconies and awnings to provide inconspicuous warmth and comfort.
